Our Philosophy

Foundation

At The Little Red Schoolhouse, our academic program is purposefully structured to protect childhood while cultivating strong foundations in literacy and numeracy.

We believe childhood is a sacred season of growth—intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual—and we honor that by creating an environment where children can think deeply, ask questions, and explore without the pressure of screens or rote testing.

For the 2026–2027 school year, students receive 1,111 instructional hours, significantly exceeding the Virginia Department of Education requirement of 990 hours. This intentional investment of time allows teachers to provide meaningful instruction while honoring each child’s developmental pace.

Curriculum and Learning Approach

Our curriculum centers on reading, writing, phonics, and mathematics, taught through explicit, research-based methods that support true comprehension and lasting learning habits.

We are a technology-free school—not out of trend, but out of conviction. Research shows children learn best through direct interaction, movement, and sensory engagement, which strengthens cognitive development, executive function, and memory retention.

Movement is integral to learning at The Little Red Schoolhouse. Children stand, sit, walk, manipulate materials, and think with their whole bodies, honoring childhood as a time for active discovery rather than passive consumption. This approach builds confident learners who are known, valued, and understood.

Morning Academic Rhythm

Mornings are intentionally structured to support focus, faith, and foundational learning.

Each day begins with a student-led prayer circle and the Pledge of Allegiance, fostering leadership, gratitude, and community.

Students then engage in age-appropriate Bible study, with younger children exploring simple Bible stories and older students studying Scripture more deeply while making connections to real-life experiences.

From approximately 8:30 to 11:30, students work in differentiated learning pods, focusing on phonics, reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics. Instruction is personalized to ensure both conceptual understanding and practical application.
