The Little Red Schoolhouse - Virginia’s Farm School ™

Afternoons Outside

Overview

The Little Red Schoolhouse is Virginia’s Farm School, offering an educational model grounded in real-world science, agrarian knowledge, and applied learning.

Rather than relying solely on textbooks and worksheets, students engage directly with the life cycles of plants and animals—learning science through observation, responsibility, and hands-on practice. Children study plant growth from seed to harvest, explore soil health, practice seed saving, and participate in harvesting and preserving food, transforming abstract scientific concepts into lived experience.

Science and Animal Care

Students learn zoology and ecology through daily interaction with animals on the farm. They work with mammals, birds, and reptiles, learning to identify species, understand habitats, observe behavior, and explain life cycles in an authentic setting.

Caring for animals through age-appropriate responsibilities builds discipline, empathy, and accountability, reinforcing biological concepts in meaningful, memorable ways.

Leadership and Communication

Beyond academics, students develop confidence, communication skills, and leadership. Throughout the year, they engage with visiting students and families during on-site field trips, presenting what they’ve learned, explaining farm systems, and answering questions with clarity and confidence.

This purposeful public speaking strengthens language development, content mastery, and social competence, preparing children to think critically, communicate effectively, and understand the world through direct experience rather than passive consumption.
